Where Love Heals

Where love, heartbreak, and healing live in words

Home

I kept thinking
we were looking
for the same thing.

A place
where the noise
finally stopped.

I called it
home.

You called it
a place
you’d only visit.

I used to wonder
what I did
to make you
keep choosing distance

inside
the moments
that should have
felt closest.

Now I know

it was never
about me.

You weren’t afraid
of loving me.

You were afraid
of meeting
the parts of yourself

that love
would have asked you
to face.

For a long time,

I mistook
surviving you
for loving you.

There’s a difference.

One leaves you
counting
everything
you said wrong.

The other
lets you forget
there was ever
a score.

I don’t hate you.

Hate
would mean
I was still carrying
what belonged
to you.

I’m not.

I left it
where you dropped it.

What I carry now

is lighter.

It sounds like
my own laughter.

It looks like
flowers
I buy myself
without waiting
for a reason.

It feels like
walking into a room

without wondering
if I’ll have
to become smaller

to stay.

You once
looked at me

and saw
someone broken.

I look back

and see someone

still trying.

Someone
who kept choosing love

even when
it wasn’t
being returned.

There is no shame
in that.

Only proof

that my heart
was never
the thing
that needed fixing.

I hope
one day

you discover

that peace
cannot be stolen
from another person.

That no one
becomes whole

by teaching someone else
to question
their own worth.

As for me,

I’ve stopped
looking for home

in people

who only know
how to leave.

I found it
the moment

I stopped
asking someone else

to convince me

I deserved
someone that would stay.

  1. I had been eagerly waiting for a new one, and you most certainly delivered!

“I called it home. You called it a place you’d only visit.” – As soon as this line came along, It hit me very deep, and I knew I was in for a treat!

I loved how this piece finished powerfully too with metaphoric actions of beautiful forms of self love. Making sure to choose and appreciate your own garden first, before someone tries to walk in again. Making sure the next time to never settle for anything less than total and utter appreciation for it! I love it! πŸ‘πŸ»

    1. Christopher… thank you. 🀍

The fact that “I called it home. You called it a place you’d only visit.” was the line that stopped you tells me you felt exactly what I hoped people would. It hurt me to write that truth but also reminded me that it’s time to move on because that is not the love that I want.

I also love what you took from the ending. That’s exactly where this poem was trying to arrive. After spending so long believing love meant waiting, shrinking, or proving my worth, I wanted it to end with choosing myself instead. Buying the flowers. Protecting my own garden. Finding home within myself before ever looking for it in someone else. I hope you, too, are living by these words. Join me in the “no more longer shrinking ourselves for love.” LOVE doesn’t demand shrinking.

Thank you for reading my poetry and for taking the time to leave such thoughtful reflections. They’re never just comments to me. They remind me why I keep writing.

      I’m so grateful you’re here. 🀍

      1. It is such a pleasure Jacque! I absolutely loved this entire response! I always have gratitude when I “just get it.” It helps myself, and other beautiful human beings such as yourself, feel seen and heard! That is achieving true greatness in a nutshell! I indeed have decided myself to join you in “LOVE doesn’t demand shrinking.” We shall NEVER shrink! NEVER EVER AGAIN! Even if it hurts in the end, then it’s all worth it! For there is no greater force, or greater action than to love at the deepest depths completely and fully without reservations! 🀍
