Where Love Heals

Where love, heartbreak, and healing live in words

What Matters Most

We spend our lives
polishing the outside,

mistaking shine for substance,

believing the house,
the clothes,
the title,
the money
will somehow make us enough.

We measure ourselves
against what the world calls valuable.

Who has more.
Who has less.
Who belongs.

And then one day,
another person you
love is gone.

And suddenly,
none of it matters.

No one remembers
the title beside your name
or how carefully
you dressed for the world.

They remember your hands.

What they reached for.
What they gave.

They remember
how you made a hard day softer.

How you made someone laugh
when they had forgotten how.

How you stayed
when leaving would have been easier.

How you noticed
when someone was hurting.

They remember
being loved by you.

And isn’t that strange?

The things we spend
our whole lives trying to prove
become meaningless,

while one small kindness
can live inside someone
forever.

We lose people
before we’re finished loving them.

Before we’ve said enough.
Before we’ve made enough memories.

And when they’re gone,
everything else looks smaller.

The deadlines.
The possessions.
The comparison.
The endless wanting.

Smaller.

Because no one reaches
the end of their life
wishing they had worked more.

We wish we had stayed longer.

Called more.

Said I love you
without waiting for the right moment.

We wish we’d understood
while we still believed
we had time:

Love was the point.

Not the house.
Not the car.
Not the clothes.
Not the titles.

Maybe that is all a life is.

The pieces of ourselves
we leave in one another.

A kindness gesture.
A laugh.
A memory.
A hand held at the right moment.

A heart made lighter
because ours was there.

And when everything else
is gone,

perhaps what remains
is not what we built
around ourselves,

but what we built
inside each other.

Maybe a life isn’t measured
by how much we managed to have,

but by how much love
we managed to leave behind.
