There are things in this world
that do not disappear.
They simply become
part of the landscape.
The river forgets the shape of its banks,
yet carries the memory of every stone
that changed its course.
The wind moves through an empty house,
touching curtains,
finding its way through rooms
where laughter once lived.
And nothing has to happen
for the house to remember.
I think the heart is something like that.
It learns the shape of certain moments,
the warmth of a season,
the feeling of being somewhere
you could not imagine leaving.
And then, one day,
the season changes.
You build a life beyond it.
You laugh, make plans,
learn to belong to the present.
Until something small
opens a door inside you,
and suddenly,
you are standing in two moments at once.
The life you have built
is still there.
But somewhere beneath it,
another version of the world
comes briefly into view.
Perhaps this is what it means
to have lived something fully.
Not that it follows you everywhere,
but that the smallest thing
can uncover what time
has gently covered over.
I used to think time was erasure,
that enough ordinary mornings
could make everything
indistinguishable from everything else.
But perhaps time teaches us
to carry what we cannot keep
without carrying it everywhere.
To let a memory exist
without making a home inside it.
To feel what once mattered
and still allow the day to continue.
Because the day does continue.
The light changes on the walls.
Somewhere, a kettle begins to sing.
The trees keep their appointments
with the wind.
And the heart,
having opened an old room
for only a moment,
finds its way back
to the life unfolding around it.
Maybe healing was never meant
to make us strangers
to everything we have known.
Maybe it is the quiet art
of holding our histories
without confusing them
for our future.
Not everything we remember
is something we need.
Not everything we feel
is something we must follow.
And not everything that remains
is asking us to return.
Some things are simply true
because they happened.
Because, for a little while,
the world was different
than it is now.
Because we were there.
Because we felt it.
And because even as life carries us
into rooms we have yet to enter,
some small part of us
will always know
the way the light fell
in the ones we left behind.
